8. Blessing in disguise

I thought it was totally absurd, totally impossible. That’s how I thought at first, but now, as I thought of it, I find myself really silly and funny. Looking at my beautiful wife, I thought of our courtship time, it was really romantic in a sense that I thought it was really funny.

Upon recapping the previous courtship memories, that broad smile of mine would simply reappeared once again. 20 years back, when I was twenty years old, just a typical playful boy hanging around with friends all day long. Through my friends, I know a really cool and fierce girl, Jane. She was the type of girl who was really straightforward and outgoing. At first, I did not like her that well. I thought she was too bold as a lady.

One really memorable evening, my friends and I together with Jane had decided to ride on our bikes together and go for a spin. The sky was clear blue and clear breeze flew pass our faces every moment. Coincidently, Jane was riding behind me. Suddenly, in front of us is a steep, slippery slope. Unfortunately for me, I could not properly balanced myself and ended up I got into a car accident. The accident happened too fast, I simply did not have the time to quickly react. All I knew was that, the next moment I was lying on the ground. The feeling of blood gushing out of my limbs were felt, the pain was extreme intense. There were not much people around me, most of my friends rode in front of me, therefore did not know I had got into an accident. Fortunately, there was Jane riding behind me, she immediately hauled in time and attended to me. She called the ambulance and while waiting, she said something really touching, oh how I would remember the words for life.

‘Johnny, are you terribly in pain? You got to live on. Please don’t die down on us. Be strong! No matter what, I’ll be there.’ Oh! How encouraging she is, it totally amazed me!

She must have known I was in terrible pain by the pale face I gave. She grabbed me hard on the hand and gave me a tight hug! She assured me everything would turn out well. Ambulance arrived and they immediately brought me to the hospital to receive treatment. I was trembling in fear as they medicate me. I was made hospitalized for three days and during this period, many friends came to visit me but without fear, I would see Jane everyday.

After I had fully recovered, I thanked Jane for the effort she had put in me. I was seriously very touched. Days by days passed, Jane and I build up a strong relationship. I really felt that she was very true, soon, very soon, I felt deeply in love with her. Fortunately, she felt the same about me, we dated for quite a few years, and really confirmed how we felt about each other. That romantic night, my 2nd anniversary of knowing her, I proposed to her in a dark night along the beach, with a big bouquet of flower and a diamond ring. Very willingly, she nodded her head! I felt a sudden strong gush of spirit in me. Excited! Happiness! Love! Eagerness! I just thought everything was possible!

Looking back, it had been already 20 years! Still, I will remember the process and our really interesting courtship time. The incident is really a ‘blessing in disguise’. The bike accident was bad, but it made me realized my love for Jane. I really appreciate all she had done for me.

Tonight, it’s our 20th wedding anniversary. I plucked up my courage tonight and said to her. ‘Jane, thanks for all you had done for me! I truly appreciate it and I meant it. I love you!’
